Fred Bernard Wood was active throughout his life with a wide range of organizations and causes. Many of these organizations are still active today, sometimes with a changed name or reorganized structure, pursuing the causes and values that Fred Bernard held close to his heart. Listed below by topical area are the websites of:

  • Organizations with which he was active over an extended period of time (including successor organizations if there were name changes or reorganizations)
  • Organizations with which he maintained a membership for a significant period of time
  • Organizations with which he was strongly aligned by virtue of his work and values framework, but did not have a formal role or sustained membership

The links are organized by the following topical areas:

Religion & Conscious Co-Evolution

Fred Bernard Wood grew up with Unitarian parents and Quaker relatives. He was active with the Unitarian Church throughout his adult life, in Berkeley CA, San Jose Ca, and Flagstaff AZ. He also participated in the Unity Church for some years while in San Jose. Fred found these religious frameworks to be compatible with his strongly held view about the need for “conscious co-evolution,” with heightened human consciousness and ability to live in peace and harmony, as advocated by organizations such as the Institute of Noetic Sciences and the Foundation for Conscious Co-Evolution. Fred paid close attention to the prophesies of Indigenous Peoples about the future, and especially the Hopi Indians.

The Unitarian Universalist Church practices a liberal religion with Jewish-Christian roots. It has no creed. It affirms the worth of human beings, advocates freedom of belief and the search for advancing truth, and tries to provide a warm, open, supportive community for people who believe that ethical living is the supreme witness of religion. Fred was actively involved in the Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley, CA, San Jose Unitarian Church and later the UU Fellowship of Flagstaff.

The Association of Unity Churches is centered on these core values

  • Spirit-led: We are centered in God. Spirit leads our thoughts and actions as we co-create a world that works for all.
  • Integrity: We act from a place of wholeness and are ethical in all our actions. We keep our word.
  • Diversity: We believe that all people are created with sacred worth. We promote greater understanding among people in a spirit of unity.
  • Transformation: We are a dynamic movement on the cutting edge of spiritual evolution. We teach universal spiritual principles that change lives.
  • Abundance: Living in the infinite flow of God's good, we draw from God's inexhaustible supply and wisely use our rich resources to serve the world.

Fred participated with the Unity Community Church of San Jose.

The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) is a radical, egalitarian, spirit-filled Christianity that refuses to be oppressive of people on account of race, sex, or class. One of the most important messages that Quakers have to offer is that religion, or belief, is experiential. It is not just a matter of accepting words or practices but of experiencing God for oneself. The fact that God is always present means that the whole of a person's life is sacramental; Friends affirm the need to practice the presence of God in all activity. It follows, therefore, that Friends emphasize the importance of combining the inward and outward journeys. It is the inward/outward process that has led Friends into pioneering social action such as reforms of prisons, schools and mental institutions, improving conditions of employment, supporting refugees and others in need, providing an ambulance service in wartime and examining the consequences of proposed legislation.

The Institute of the Noetic Sciences (IONS) is a nonprofit membership organization located in Northern California that conducts and sponsors leading-edge research into the potentials and powers of consciousness—including perceptions, beliefs, attention, intention, and intuition. The Institute explores phenomena that do not necessarily fit conventional scientific models, while maintaining a commitment to scientific rigor.

The Foundation for Conscious Co-Evolution is based on the lifetime work of Barbara Marx Hubbard. "Due to the increased power given us through science and technology, we are learning how nature works – the gene, the atom, the brain. We are affecting our own evolution by everything we do. With these new powers we can destroy our life support systems …or we can move toward a hope-filled future of immeasurable possibilities." Conscious Co-Evolution is a process of giving direction to the evolution of human systems by purposeful action. It is a process by which individuals and groups, families, organizations, and societies can envision and create images of what should be, and bring those images to life by design.

Hopi Prophecies: One of the reasons for Fred’s move from San Jose to Flagstaff was to be closer to the Hopi Indians and to better understand the Hopi Prophecies. The Rainbow Family also studies Hopi Prophecies.

Systems Science, Engineering & Social Responsibility

Fred Bernard Wood was a systems scientist and electrical engineer, and he was committed to the socially responsible use of science and technology. This area was a primary focus for his professional life and was reflected in his extensive involvement with systems science and cybernetics organizations. Over his lifetime, he participated in dozens of meetings of the Society for General Systems Research (later called the International Society for the Systems Sciences). Fred was a Registered Professional Engineer in California and was proud of his life time membership in both the State and national professional engineering and electrical engineering organizations. He was fully supportive of several major organizations that advocated the social responsibility of scientists and engineers. After retiring from IBM Corporation, Fred founded his own Computer Social Impact Research Institute to pursue systems science and social responsibility research (see the Biography and Papers sections for more information on CSIRI).

The International Society for the Systems Sciences (ISSS) is among the first and oldest organizations devoted to interdisciplinary inquiry into the nature of complex systems, and remains perhaps the most broadly inclusive. Originally founded as the Society for General Systems Research, the society adopted its current name in 1988 to reflect its broadening scope. It aims to

  • to investigate the isomorphy of concepts, laws, and models in various fields, and to help in useful transfers from one field to another
  • to encourage the development of adequate theoretical models in areas which lack them
  • to eliminate the duplication of theoretical efforts in different fields
  • to promote the unity of science through improving the communication among specialists.

Management Cybernetics: Cybernetics studies the flow of information round a system and the way in which that information is used by the system as a mean of controlling itself. Anthony Stafford Beer applied natural cybernetics laws to all types of organizations and institutions created by human beings, and to the interactions within them and between them. This "management cybernetics" addresses the issues that every individual who wants to influence an organization in any way must learn to resolve. Every member of an organization and every person who to a greater or lesser extent communicates or interacts with it is involved in the considerations. The Liverpool John Moores University maintains The Stafford Beer Collection, a collection of almost 2000 books and pamphlets, a PDF archive of Beer's papers, together with paintings, models, gramophone records and memorabilia.

Center for Partnership Studies, founded by Riane Eisler, seeks to advance human development by accelerating movement to the partnership model of relations. The partnership model is a way of structuring beliefs, institutions, and relations that supports the realization of our enormous human capacities for consciousness, caring, and creativity and promotes nonviolence, human rights, justice, and a sustainable environment.

National Society of Professional Engineers keeps its members in touch with the latest in their field through respected publications and information resources, opportunities for mentoring and continuing education, and through a national conference and meetings, where members can meet and share ideas with colleagues. Fred was a member both of the national society and the California Society of Professional Engineers, interested especially in the ethical obligations of engineers.

American Association for the Advancement of Science undertakes numerous programs and activities that promote science to the public and monitor issues which affect the scientific community. For many years, meetings of the then Society for General Systems Research (forerunner of the current ISSS) were held in conjunction with the AAAS, and the SGSR held a plenary panel session as part of the AAAS program.

Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers is a professional organization with societies focused on several topics. Fred was particularly interested in their Society on Social Implications of Technology.

International Federation of Systems Research, Founded in 1981, the IFSR included the ISSS and American Society for Cybernetics as among its most active members, and frequently co-sponsored activities with various of the member organizations including the SGSR/ISSS, of which FBWIII was a life time member. Today, the IFSR has grown to 26 member associations drawn primarily from the USA, Western and Eastern Europe, and Far East (China, Korea, Japan).

Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility advocates for socially responsible use of computer and information technology and protection of civil and constitutional rights.

Union of Concerned Scientists is the leading science-based nonprofit working for a healthy environment and a safer world. UCS combines independent scientific research and citizen action to develop innovative, practical solutions and to secure responsible changes in government policy, corporate practices, and consumer choices.

Federation of American Scientists was founded in 1945 by scientists who had worked on the Manhattan Project to develop the first atomic bombs. These scientists recognized that science had become central to many key public policy questions. They believed that scientists had a unique responsibility to both warn the public and policy leaders of potential dangers from scientific and technical advances and to show how good policy could increase the benefits of new scientific knowledge.

Energy & Environment

Fred Bernard Wood was a long time environmentalist who enjoyed the outdoors and the trees. One of his few lifetime exercise passions was hiking in the woods and parks of California, sometimes participating in Sierra Club backpacking trips. He strongly supported various environmental advocacy organizations. Fred’s major environmental focus for the last couple of decades of his life was global climate change. He worked closely with his colleague Alden Bryant to help run the Earth Regeneration Society, which had and still has a major focus on mitigating and reversing climate change. Fred and Alden actively collaborated with the grassroots organization Remineralize the Earth to advocate the use of glacial rock dust to help rejuvenate existing forests and farmlands. Fred was a proponent of the Gaia Theory of a living Planet Earth, which was very consistent with his systems science principles.

Earth Regeneration Society educates and informs the general public about environmental issues that affect social, economic, and political systems and develops, supports and promotes scientific methods and research to address these environmental concerns for the preservation and betterment of all living things.

A major focus will be the preparation, printing and distribution of our book "PLANET BUDGET" with targets for soil remineralization, forest expansion or re-planting, and new energy technologies, and bringing the atmospheric carbon dioxide level from around 380 parts per million (ppm) back to 280 ppm and thereby contributing to stabilization of the climate. "PLANET BUDGET" will call for local and national bodies to accept these targets, or develop their own, as a "planetary budget" to work toward. This will be a natural extension of the United Nations Rio Summit and the call for a Climate Stabilization Treaty, June 1992. These targets, as a whole, can be considered part of a full survival operation following the actions started during the last ten years.

James Lovelock's Gaia Theory: Gaia, besides being the name for the living being also known as planet earth, is the name of the hypothesis of science which postulates that the climate and the composition of the Earth always are close to an optimum for whatever life inhabits it. There is nothing unusual in the idea of life on Earth interacting with the air, sea and rocks, but it took a view from outside to glimpse the possibility that this combination might consist of a single giant living system and one with the capacity to keep the Earth always at a state most favorable for the life upon it.

The Sierra Club's members and supporters are more than 1.3 million of your friends and neighbors. Inspired by nature, we work together to protect our communities and the planet. The Club is America's oldest, largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization.

Environmental Defense Fund partners with business, governments, and communities to find practical environmental solutions based on strong science, innovative markets, corporate partnerships, and effective laws and policy.

Natural Resources Defense Council is an effective environmental action group, combining the grassroots power of 1.2 million members and online activists with the courtroom clout and expertise of more than 350 lawyers, scientists and other professionals to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things.

Save the Redwoods League has helped protect more than 180,000 acres of redwood-related land in California. In addition to extensive work in the heart of the North Coast's redwood region, the League has assisted in the development of many parks in the southern range of the redwoods including Portola, Butano, Big Basin, Julia Pfeiffer Burns, Wilder Ranch, and Limekiln State Parks. The League is the only organization focused on conservation of the redwood forest throughout its natural range.

Remineralize the Earth promotes the regeneration of soils and forests worldwide with finely ground rock dust as a sustainable alternative to chemical fertilizers and pesticides, creating fertile soils much as the Earth does. Not only do we need to recycle and return the organic matter to the soil, it is equally vital to return all of the mineral nutrients which create fertile soils and healthy crops and forests. Remineralization is essential to restore ecological balance and stabilize the climate.

Peace & Justice

Fred Bernard Wood served in WWII at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to help develop microwave radar essential to defeat of Nazi Germany. But with that exception, Fred was a life long peace advocate. He was active with local and national peace advocacy organizations, and was also a proponent of arms control and nuclear non-proliferation. In parallel, Fred was ever vigilant about the protection of civil and constitutional rights and tendencies toward their erosion even in the USA, and supportive of organizations with similar concerns. In his retirement years, he intensified his foreign travel including the then Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc, as well as Cuba, and became a citizen ambassador-scientist of sorts, working to improve international understanding and common efforts for peace, justice, equity, and environmental sustainability. The range of Fred’s interests are reflected in the missions of organizations such as Global Exchange.

The American Civil Liberties Union aims to preserve the protections guaranteed by the Bill of Rights and its amendments:

  • Your First Amendment rights - freedom of speech, association and assembly; freedom of the press, and freedom of religion.
  • Your right to equal protection under the law - equal treatment regardless of race, sex, religion or national origin.
  • Your right to due process - fair treatment by the government whenever the loss of your liberty or property is at stake.

They work also to extend rights to segments of our population that have traditionally been denied their rights, including Native Americans and other people of color; lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender people; women; mental-health patients; prisoners; people with disabilities; and the poor. If the rights of society's most vulnerable members are denied, everybody's rights are imperiled.

Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom (WILPF) was founded in 1915 during World War I, with Jane Addams as its first president. WILPF works to achieve through peaceful means world disarmament, full rights for women, racial and economic justice, an end to all forms of violence, and to establish those political, social, and psychological conditions which can assure peace, freedom, and justice for all. WILPF works to create an environment of political, economic, social and psychological freedom for all members of the human community, so that true peace can be enjoyed by all.

American Friends Service Committee carries out service, development, social justice, and peace programs throughout the world. Founded by Quakers in 1917 to provide conscientious objectors with an opportunity to aid civilian war victims, AFSC's work attracts the support and partnership of people of many races, religions, and cultures. AFSC's work is based on the Quaker belief in the worth of every person and faith in the power of love to overcome violence and injustice. The organization's mission and achievements won worldwide recognition in 1947 when it accepted the Nobel Peace Prize with the British Friends Service Council on behalf of all Quakers.

The San Jose Peace and Justice Center has educated thousands of local people to critical issues of peace and justice. Throughout its history, the Peace Center has been a consistent voice for alternatives to the ever increasing violence and militarism taking place throughout the world. The Peace Center was founded in 1957 by individuals profoundly concerned about the growth of nuclear arsenals and about atmospheric testing. With the signing of the Limited Test Ban Treaty in 1963, the Peace Center then spearheaded local efforts to end the war in Vietnam. When the Vietnam war ended, the Peace Center then made nuclear disarmament and the development of nonviolence its primary concerns. In 1983, the San Jose Peace Center formalized its long-term relationship with the Fellowship of Reconciliation. The FOR is an interfaith, international pacifist organization.

The Friends Committee on National Legislation is the largest peace lobby in Washington, DC. Founded in 1943 by members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), FCNL staff and volunteers work with a nationwide network of tens of thousands of people from many different races, religions, and cultures to advocate social and economic justice, peace, and good government. FCNL is nonpartisan.

Peace Action is the nation's largest grassroots peace network, with chapters and affiliates in 30 states. They organize a grassroots network to place pressure on Congress and the Administration through write-in campaigns, internet actions, citizen lobbying and direct action. Through a close relationship with progressive members of Congress, they play a key role in devising strategies to move forward peace legislation, and, as a leading member of United for Peace and Justice and the Win Without War coalition, they lend their expertise and large network to achieving common goals. Peace Action arose out of the merger of two groups: SANE (Committee for a SANE Nuclear Policy) and FREEZE (Nuclear Weapons Freeze Campaign).

Council for a Livable World was founded in 1962 by eminent nuclear physicist Leo Szilard and other scientists who worked in the pioneer days of atomic weapons. The goal of these men and women, who knew firsthand the nature of nuclear weapons, was to warn the public and Congress of the threat of nuclear war and lead the way to rational arms control and nuclear disarmament. Today, the Council continues to provide Senators and Members of Congress with sophisticated technical and scientific information that helps them make intelligent decisions about weapons of mass destruction - nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, nuclear nonproliferation, and other national security issues.

The Center for Arms Control and Disarmament developed out of the Council for a Livable World and is devoted to providing in-depth analysis and commentary on issues like biological and chemical weapons, homeland security, Iran's nuclear program, the war in Iraq, military policy, missile defense, national security issues in Congress, national security spending, North Korea, nuclear non-proliferation, nuclear terrorism, and nuclear weapons.

Global Exchange is an education and action resource center advancing social, environmental and economic justice by transforming the global economy from profit centered to people centered, from currency to community. In addition to providing informational resources, labor organizing, and fair trade market development, Global Exchange organizes reality tours to countries in the Global South.

New Energy

Fred Bernard Wood in his later years was a strong advocate of new energy and especially including new electromagnetic energy sources in the tradition of inventor Nikola Tesla . Fred identified with Tesla, and talked personally with various new energy inventors and attended meetings on the topic in the San Francisco Bay Area, the California State Capitol in Sacramento, Southern California, and at some ISSS meetings elsewhere in the US and abroad. He was a close personal colleague of inventor Tom Bearden (see below). The lines of new energy research and development that he championed are well represented in the following web sites.

The New Energy Movement is dedicated to the study and promotion of advanced, clean, and sustainable energy sources for our imperiled planet. They recognize that the single most highly-leveraged opportunity for advancement towards solving our complex global problems lies in a transformation of the way human civilization generates and utilizes energy. Their primary task is to encourage intelligent public debate and action on how best to accelerate these advances, making a rapid transition away from our dangerous dependence on fossil fuels and nuclear power.

Institute for New Energy is a non-profit organization dedicated to researching and reporting on the development of advanced energy conversion devices. Such devices include charge cluster technology, "free-energy" machines and "over-unity" devices, where new or novel "potential energy" sources can be identified as new energy sources. Several such devices have been developed in the past, including the dry-cell battery, fuel cells, dams, nuclear fission reactors, and cold fusion cells.

Advanced Energy Research Organization is a new research and development group formed to develop and strategically protect new energy and propulsion technologies. It is our goal, utilizing a unique strategic approach, to bring forth these new environmentally sound technologies to replace virtually all fossil fuel, internal combustion and ionizing nuclear technologies within 20-30 years.

The New Energy Congress is an association for the purpose of reviewing the most promising claims to up-and-coming clean, renewable, affordable, reliable energy technologies, in order to come up with a weighted list of recommendations of the best technologies. They have established the Pure Energy Systems PESWiki as a forum for information exchange.

The Orion Project is a non-profit foundation created to transform the current energy, environmental and social crisis into a world of sustainability and Enlightened Abundance. Technological progress in the areas of advanced physics and electromagnetic systems, if appropriately supported, will enable humanity to live on the Earth with a minimal footprint with genuine long-term sustainability. For over 100 years, these advanced concepts in energy generation have either been ignored or actively suppressed due to the power of fossil-fuel based economic and industrial interests.

Tom Bearden is a former US Army LTC who has done extensive research on new energy and new weapons systems based on advanced electromagnetics. His site contains papers that address permissible electrical power systems that take electromagnetic energy from the vacuum and use it to power loads; the electrical operation of the body's healing cellular regeneration system; and the nature of mind, thought, mind operations, and the mind-body connection. Tom was a close colleague of Fred Bernard Wood III.

Other Alternative Science

Fred Bernard Wood also expressed interest in and an openness to other non-mainstream or alternative science and theories, including not only New Energy but also New Physics, Quantum Vacuum, Holographic Universe, and other Anomalous Phenomena. The following web sites are illustrative of the lines of research and exploration that Fred embraced. Fred was quite concerned about what he believed to be suppression of information and research on such phenomena, including New Energy, by vested interests including elements of government and the military-industrial complex.

Tiller Foundation researches and promotes Psychoenergetic Science, which involves the expansion of traditional science to include human consciousness and human intention as capable of significantly affecting both the properties of materials (non-living and living) and what we call "physical reality."

Earth Files is crossroads where experts, eyewitnesses and viewers meet to share the latest updates in earth and astronomical mysteries, in-depth reports that go beyond the 6 o'clock news.

Extraterrestrial Existence

Fred Bernard Wood did not conduct research on extraterrestrials, and was not known to have discussed the topic much until the last decade or so of his life in this physical plane. In his later years, he did acknowledge his belief in the reality of extraterrestrial existence, closely followed the work of Steve Greer and the Disclosure Project, and indeed expressed concern for the security and safety of Dr. Greer. Fred had a special interest in the Pleiadians, and also in the so-called Planet X theories which do include hypotheses about early and periodic extraterrestrial visitation to Planet Earth. One of his reasons to move from San Jose CA to Flagstaff AZ was to live at a much higher elevation that would be safe from presumed tsunami effects of a pole shift and other consequences of a relatively close encounter with Planet X.

The Center for the Study of Extraterrestrial Intelligence is an international nonprofit scientific research and education organization dedicated to the furtherance of our understanding of extraterrestrial intelligence. CSETI's projects include the CE-5 Initiative and the Disclosure Project, which works to fully disclose the facts about UFOs, extraterrestrial intelligence, and classified advanced energy and propulsion systems. They have over 400 government, military, and intelligence community witnesses testifying to their direct, personal, first hand experience with UFOs, ETs, ET technology, and the cover-up that keeps this information secret.

The Majestic Documents is a website dedicated to the United State's UFO program called Majestic (or MAJIC or MJ-12) and the top secret government documents that tell the story of presidential and military action, authorization, and cover-up regarding UFOs and their alien occupants. They plan to build a strong information base that focuses on the authenticity of these and new documents and implement the most effective way to educate the public and world governments to their reality and implications.

The UFO Research Coalition is dedicated to the disciplined, objective and scholarly investigation of the UFO phenomenon and the professional presentation of those investigations to similarly inclined colleagues, the public, and responsible members of the media and the government. The mission of the case investigation arm of the Coalition is to identify high quality cases and conduct thorough scientific investigations, with the specific goals of publishing these results in mainstream scientific journals and of gaining the attention of the scientific community.

The Enterprise Mission is a non-profit research organization promoting public understanding of major achievements of the Space Age over the past 30 years despite governmental cover up.

The Pleiadians are a collective of multidimensional spirit beings from the Pleiades star system, and have been speaking through Barbara Marciniak, an internationally acclaimed trance channel, since May of 1988. The Pleiadians are here to assist humanity with the process of spiritual transformation in the years leading up to December 2012. Their distinctive style blends wit and wisdom, common sense, and cosmic knowledge in teachings that encourage expansive thinking and personal empowerment, and which have been compared to native shamanism. Fred Bernard Wood III believed he had been visited by Pleiadians in San Jose, CA.

Zecharia Sitchin is an author of books promoting the ancient astronaut theory of human origins. He attributes the creation of the ancient Sumerian culture to the "Annunaki," (or "Nephilim") a race of aliens from an undiscovered planet named Nibiru in the Earth's solar system. He asserts that Sumerian mythology reflects this view.

ZetaTalk is a website started in 1995 by Nancy Lieder, who claims to channel messages from extra-terrestrials called Zetas through an implant in her brain. Lieder states that she was chosen to warn mankind about Planet X, which would sweep through the solar system in May 2003, causing a pole shift that would destroy most of humanity. The pole shift would apparently be caused by magnetic attraction between the earth's core and the magnetism of the passing planet. This magnetic disruption of the Earth's core and subsequent displacement of the crust of the Earth is said to correspond with the event Christians refer to as the biblical Armageddon.
